The Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor marked its 28th anniversary with a “Breakfast of Champions” event on Sept. 17 in the Masonic Philanthropic Lodge. The celebration honored local sailing icons and environmental advocates, and featured Paralympic gold medalist Maureen McKinnon as the keynote speaker.

 

Recently, John Williams and Becky Linhart, both Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor Rotarians, presented information on the Enhanced Scholarship Trust which was founded in 2006 by the RCoMH Board of Directors to provide a permanent funding source for scholarships. The mission of the Trust is to grow, manage and administer scholarships to help meet the needs of the community. The goal is to provide six 4-full year scholarships for high school students seeking degree courses and a "Second Chance Scholarship" for individuals who would like to take a course to enhance their career. Successful recipients for the Second Chance Scholarship will receive up to $2500 paid directly to the educational institution on their behalf. Courses may be taken at a college or university, but may not be a part of a degree program.

To raise awareness and critically-needed funds to fight the crippling disease polio, Rob Deiana and Matt Paullis from the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor plunged into the icy waters off of Gloucester on January 23rd. It was part of the Rotary District 7930’s 6th Annual Polar Plunge. The effort raised just over $70k for the Rotary Foundation to eradicate polio around the world. 

 

The Polar Plunge comes at an important time in the fight against polio, which would be only the second human disease to be eradicated. Case numbers of the disease have never been lower, and only two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus.  It was only last September that Nigeria marked a year without a new case and was removed from the endemic list. Funds raised for this campaign not only work to eradicate polio, they also strengthen our global responses to many communicable diseases such Ebola.  

 

Rotary, a humanitarian service organization with nearly 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, made polio eradication its top priority in 1985. Rotary has since contributed US$1.2 billion, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries. Overall, remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio. Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 a year to just 72 in 2015. The Americas were declared free from polio in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000, and Europe in 2002. A highly infectious disease, polio still strikes children mainly under the age of five. Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. There is no cure for polio, but for as little as 60 cents worth of oral vaccine, a child can be protected from the disease for life. "Friends Forever" a group of 10 students from Ireland will be co-hosted by us and the Marblehead Rotary Club Thursday, Oct. 22 at the Gerry 5 on Beacon St. The kids will spend the day with our own Interact club (harbor cruise, project with Penny Bears and interactive games with Tom Harvey) - come and join the kids for dinner ($15) prrepared by Chef Linda Bassett. Officials from the Rotary District representing Greater Boston and Southern New Hampshire visited the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor recently.

In his talk District Governor David Manzi issued a call to action for collaboration among local clubs in the mission of service above self.

Two new members were recently welcomed into the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor.

 

President Connie Paullis pins a Rotary pin on Kyle Wiley, center. Awaiting her pin, left, is Dr. Patricia Sullivan. Wiley is the administrative aide to the Board of Selectmen and Town Administrator. She chairs the Marblehead Forever Committee and is the town’s Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator. Dr. Sullivan holds professorships at three international universities and is a specialist in international health care education, which is part of Rotary’s mission.
