Local Artist Unveils and Donates Holiday Art Work for Rotary RaffleRoy Brindamour with Club President Katlheen Murphy and his 2019 Father Christmas Marbkehead artist Roy Brindamour unveiled the 2019 Father Christmas he created for the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor’s Holiday Pops on the Move! concert, at a reception at Abbot Library. Father Christmas will be raffled at the Pops on the Move! Evening at the Hooper Mansion on December 14th. Raffle tickets are available at the Arnould Gallery, from Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor members, on the Pops concert evenings, or can be requested by e-mail. Brindamour is an accomplished artist, and has made winter Holiday and Father Christmas figures for many years. Each is made entirely by the artist. His interest is in nineteenth century dolls and costumes, and his knowledge and expertise are extensive. He works slowly and methodically, and each meticulous creation is truly a unique and collectible work of art. He also makes custom figures to order for a wide range of clients. His business, "Marblehead Made" is a collection of his paintings, papier mache dolls, Christmas items and other artistic works with ties to earlier times. Inspired by antiques, these original works are carefully researched to give the look and feel of an antique by using the same techniques and materials as the original. This gives his work a special timeless quality. Roy's work has been at The Peabody Essex Museum gift shop, The Wenham Museum gift shop and shops in Marblehead, MA. |
Enhanced Scholarship TrustRecently, John Williams and Becky Linhart, both Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor Rotarians, presented information on the Enhanced Scholarship Trust which was founded in 2006 by the RCoMH Board of Directors to provide a permanent funding source for scholarships. The mission of the Trust is to grow, manage and administer scholarships to help meet the needs of the community. The goal is to provide six 4-full year scholarships for high school students seeking degree courses and a "Second Chance Scholarship" for individuals who would like to take a course to enhance their career. Successful recipients for the Second Chance Scholarship will receive up to $2500 paid directly to the educational institution on their behalf. Courses may be taken at a college or university, but may not be a part of a degree program. Do you know someone who might benefit from a scholarship? Please feel free to share this information with them. We are accepting applications. To learn more about the scholarships or to APPLY, please visit: www.marbleheadscholarship.org

THE ROTARY CLUB OF MARBLEHEAD HARBOR IS HELPING MAKE POLIO HISTORYLeft to right: Heidi Whear, John William, Rob Deiana, Nancy Ferguson, Matt Paullis and Rotary President Connie Paullis
To raise awareness and critically-needed funds to fight the crippling disease polio, Rob Deiana and Matt Paullis from the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor plunged into the icy waters off of Gloucester on January 23rd. It was part of the Rotary District 7930’s 6th Annual Polar Plunge. The effort raised just over $70k for the Rotary Foundation to eradicate polio around the world. The Polar Plunge comes at an important time in the fight against polio, which would be only the second human disease to be eradicated. Case numbers of the disease have never been lower, and only two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus. It was only last September that Nigeria marked a year without a new case and was removed from the endemic list. Funds raised for this campaign not only work to eradicate polio, they also strengthen our global responses to many communicable diseases such Ebola.
Rotary, a humanitarian service organization with nearly 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, made polio eradication its top priority in 1985. Rotary has since contributed US$1.2 billion, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries. Overall, remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio. Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 a year to just 72 in 2015. The Americas were declared free from polio in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000, and Europe in 2002. A highly infectious disease, polio still strikes children mainly under the age of five. Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. There is no cure for polio, but for as little as 60 cents worth of oral vaccine, a child can be protected from the disease for life. For further information on the effort to eradicate polio, visit www.endpolio.org.
The Marblehead Harbor club has raised 2/3 of its $3000 goal this year.

FUN PR TUTORIAL ENGAGES ALLLet's hear it for good sport Lenny Cameron, who endured multiple indignities on Tuesday while helping district public image chair Amy Luckiewicz make a few points about getting the word out about our club. With President Connie as her assistant, Amy had poor Lenny covered in file cards before she was finished---but her points will definitely be remembered!
Amy actually had high press for our club for all the things we do right. Nonetheless, we can always do better! 'Twas a great presentation!
