DISTRICT GOVERNOR VISIT

District Governor Joan Arsenault (r) with Club President Kathleen Murphy

District Governor Joan Arsenault visited with our club last week and called for the club to “connect, change, and diversify”. She said RCOMH is “welcoming and vibrant”, but faced with membership decline the District is emphasizing the need to attract more members. She noted how our group has a good representation of male and female members, and encouraged us to continue to diversify. She challenged us to increase our “ability to adapt”, “invest in members, listen, and uplift”. And don’t fear embracing change. She also reminded us of the Foundation Dinner in November which will highlight amongst others the Service Dog Project.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Young Aycock, of Military Families, Inc. (c), with Club President Kathleen Murphy, and Past President Michael Cognata.
Poto by Luis Ribas

Volunteer and Marblehead Harbor Rotarian Young Aycock, received a contribution from the Club to help with her non-profit organization’s work on behalf of military families, especially those whose members are deployed overseas. Congratulations Young, for your work, energy and dedication to such a worthy cause. And for living the spirit of service above self.

HELPING BURN VICTIMS

Amaury Mejia, and Heidi Whear.

Amaury Mejia stopped by for breakfast last week and to donate a huge amount of pull tabs. Amaury is from Beverly where he lives in a group home with three other individuals. This is one of the six homes on the North Shore run by Vinfen. In June we had a contest to see which home could collect the most can tabs. Amaury took this challenge very seriously and collected four huge bags of them in three months! He is excited to continue his collection so he come have breakfast with us again soon. His favorite line is “sharing is caring.”
Thank you, Heidi Whear, for this report.

WHERE DO THE TABS GO?

The tabs our club collects are given to Philanthropic Lodge. They are packaged with other tab donations and weighed. Aleppo Temple (Shriners) then sells them to recyclers, and the proceeds are donated to the two MA Shriners Hospitals - the Boston burns facility, and the western MA Shriners Hospital.
The proceeds can be used to fund every level of need for the severely injured patients.
It seems a small thing and a tiny amount of time and work on our part to generate a huge, desperately needed service for the recipients of the treatment.
Why do we collect just the can tabs and not the whole can? The tabs are the only pure aluminum part of the can. (Once the tabs are removed, the cans may still be recycled.)
Thank you, Linda Doliber, for this report.

This Tuesday, October 1st is the last opportunity to make contributions in kind for Nepal. Patricia Sullivan will travel there for the last time and will accept pencils, crayons and other small items. If in doubt, e-mail Patricia and ask if what you can donate is what she needs.
