TOMORROW’S DINNER HAS
A WHOLE NEW MEANING

Tomorrow, you come to The Landing for dinner and someone will get help to go to school, or go back to school. Join us, says Scholarship Committee’s John Williams, and “help us light the way to brighter futures for college bound and upward bound students and achieve “’our mission to grow, manage and administer scholarship funds to meet our communities’ needs.’” Unless you’re in a post-Holiday diet mood, there’s no reason to stay home. During our last meeting it was revealed that an anonymous donor gifted $2,500 to the Scholarship Fund. While we are grateful for the donor’s generosity, we need your continued support and attendance at tonight’s dinner. This event will also double as our January Club Social and the Marblehead Club has been invited to join us.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. BE COUNTED

Check your inbox. Melissa Stacey sent out a new Rotary Survey last week to help us understand what members like, dislike, want, don’t want, would change or keep as is. She reports that as of Saturday afternoon… “we've only heard from about 20 of you. For those of who haven’t taken the 5 minutes to fill it out…your opinions and thoughts matter to us! So please answer those 10 easy questions to give us your club feedback. The survey will close on TUESDAY at 6PM.” You can access the survey by clicking the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CVFQGNG

IMPORTANT CLUB BUSINESS

Club Dues. Club Treasurer Brett Lazar says invoices for the first quarter of 2019 have gone out. He asks that members check their inboxes, as several did not pay all of last year’s invoices. Please make sure to add the treasurer’s new e-mail address to your contact list: info.rcomh@gmail.com
Attendance. Attendance at the meetings will no longer be taken by the Club Secretary. A sign-in sheet will be available on the table, left hand side as you come into the hall. Please initial next to your name. Greeters, please remind members to sign-in.
Food Pantry donation. A second $2,500 check from an anonymous donor was given to the MHD Food Pantry through our Club. We thank the donor for the generous donation and the trust placed on the RCoMH to carry out the donors wishes.
KATHLEEN'S CLASSIFICATION TALK
AND MELISSA'S DISCOVER MARBLEHEAD PROJECT

Melissa Stacey addresses the Club

This week’s speaker is Kathleen Murphy. Her realtor classification talk will be centered on her approach to real estate services. Last week, in her classification talk, Melissa Stacey spoke about how her Marblehead roots lead to her new business venture www.DiscoverMHD.com. The site is dedicated to the town, its events and businesses, and Melissa envisions it as “a centralized place” for all things Marblehead: events, business activities, support for new comers as they settle in. If you’d like to receive Melissa’s weekly newsletter click here to e-mail her.

UPDATES ON LEE, MARGARET,
DON, ED, AND JOAN

Jessica Barnett says “it is a delight to report that Lee Weed is an inspiration. She is doing very well at Rosewood, 22 Johnson Street in Peabody, where Connie Paullis is now the director. Lee is even working on a beautiful blue knitting project. She has no interest in lazing in bed and is up and sitting in a chair looking fabulous. Importantly, Lee is ready to welcome visitors. Timing may be a little tricky due to Physical Therapy sessions so you may want to call first, text or email before visiting.”
Don Doliber says “I am slowly coming back, and want to thank club members for their thoughts and prayers, and cards, and for the food that they dropped off at the house. Nice to have a good gamily like that.”
Don also hared that Ed Bell is “awaiting tests”, in ordee to have a full report on his lastest health concerns.
Margaret Greene e-mailed to say: “I am still recovering but doing well. I hope t get back to Rotary in a few weeks.”
Joan McCormack has had surgery last week. We have not received an update, but hope all is well, and wish her and all our Rotarian friends a speedy recovery.
KNOW THY NEIGHBOR…

Linda Doliber reports that she has “two confirmed club visits to promote Rotary Leadership so far this winter”:
* Thursday, January 24th @12 noon, Lynnfield Club lunch meeting, at the Sheraton Four Points, Rt. 128
* Thursday, February 21st @7:00am, at the Peabody Club, for their breakfast meeting.
Bob Erbetta and Seyla Nhean will be accompanying Linda. If anyone else is interesting in visiting these two clubs, please see Linda or email her at ldoliber@hotmail.com. She is still waiting on schedule confirmations for several other clubs and will submit them to Scuttlebutt as the dates are firmed up.
ADVENTURE AND MORE, IN NEPAL

Patricia Sullivan reports that she and “David Deutsch from the Marblehead Club met with three Interact leaders to discuss the possible Nepal service and trek trip. We reviewed a three-page handout in which Tricia provided context and logistics of the trip. On Friday Tricia, Jim Nye, and Jack Attridge also met with the full Interact club. There was great interest from the students. David indicated he would help with fundraising efforts. There are many service projects that can be worked on both by the kids and adults who accompany them.”
MHD HIGH BAGELS

Per Jim Nye, “Marblehead High School has midterm exams January 22-25. We need volunteers to spread cream cheese on bagels.  The shifts are 7AM-8:30AM and 10:15-11AM on Tuesday 1/22, Wednesday 1/23, Thursday 1/24 and Friday 1/25.” If anyone is interested, they can e-mail Jim with their desired time.
DON'T BE COMMITMENT SHY... SIGN UP NOW

Who will take the plunge into the ice cold waters of the Atlantic to raise money to eradicate polio? Our own cold weather hero Ron Deiana may do it again this year, but I’m sure he would like company. If you don’t want to jump in the water maybe you’ll join his cheering section.
So, please come to Gloucester’s Long Beach on February 9th, and help the District raise an additional $300,000 to reach our $1 million goal (yes, we have raised $700,000). When we reach the goal the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match it 2 to 1 with an additional $2 MILLION. Click here to sign up to plunge, donate to a plunger, or be a cheerleader.
BIG TOE PLUNGE… A TRADITION WILL BE BORN

It’s on!! RCOMH “Big Toe Plunge” is scheduled for February 16th 2019. Those who don’t want to, or can’t, plunge in the Atlantic in Gloucester can dip their big toe at cozier and closer Devereux Beach. More details will be forthcoming, but start thinking about creative ways to “plunge” your big toe in the water and help eradicate polio.
FINE DINING AT LA CHANTERELLE

Linda Bassett was able to get early reservations for our club for dinner at La Chanterelle at Endicott College on March 28 and April 11. We have 16 advance tickets and will soon tell you how to get one. The Board decided that if more than 16 people register for this dinner, a draw will be held. Linda reports the price per person has not been determined yet, but please note that whatever the price, wines are extra. The evening is presented by the Endicott College hospitality majors under the leadership of Chef Brendan Cronin (with two of Linda’s former students assisting him!) If you have any questions, please click here to e-mail Linda.

2018 HOLIDAY POPS ART BY PATTI BAKER
UNVEILED AT ABBOT LIBRARY

Club President Michael Cognata and artist Patti Baker unveil the “Marblehead Mailbox”

Pam Peterson reports that “on Tuesday night, RCOMH hosted a lovely event. Local artist and craftsperson Patti Baker unveiled art work she created for the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor’s Holiday Pops Concert at a reception in her honor at Abbot Library.
A large group of Rotarians and friends gathered in the library’s Virginia A. Carten Gallery for the exhibit, titled “Patti-Baker-Baskets.” The show will be on view through the months of November and December. Baker’s Holiday Pops piece is entitled “Marblehead Mailbox”, and will be raffled off the night of the Pops concert.
Flowers for the event were generously donated by Nancy Mantilla of Flores Mantilla in Marblehead. The reception was organized by RCOMH members Karyn Lang and Pam Peterson. Holiday Pops chair Diane Barbour launched the sale of raffle tickets, and notecards featuring the basket, which will be available at Rotary meetings from now until the concert.
“Marblehead Mailbox” will be on view at the Arnould Gallery at 111 Washington Street, and raffle tickets will be for sale there. Gallery owner Gene Arnould has been a longtime Rotarian and supporter of the Holiday Pops concert.” (Thank you, Beth Robinson and Kathleen Murphy for sending photos.)
HOLIDAY POPS TO FEATURE MAESTRO DIRK HILLYER
AND SOLOIST ETHAN BREMNER

Maestro Dirk Hillyer

Soloist Ethan Bremner

Maestro Dirk Hillyer and the Hillyer Festival Orchestra will take the stage at historic Abbot Hall for a wonderful evening of music and song to celebrate the season. Our annual Holiday Pops Concert will take place on Saturday, December 8th. The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with a Dessert Reception for all ticket holders. The concert begins promptly at 8:00 p.m.
This year’s concert music program is an inspiration to all to embrace and enjoy the holiday season. The concert is an opportunity for family and friends to gather together, with great music from many cultures, sing-alongs and solo selections performed by tenor Ethan Bremmer. Originally established in 1998 as a holiday ensemble for the city of Peabody, the Hillyer Festival Orchestra has become one of Greater Boston’s most popular orchestras, recognized for its quality and creative programming.
Maestro Dirk Hillyer is a highly recognized figure in the Boston area, as well as nationally. When he isn’t conducting his own orchestra or playing French horn for the Boston Lyric Opera, Hillyer is at Salem State University, where he is a tenured professor of music.
Soloist Ethan Bremner will be featured. Since his arrival in Boston, Ethan Bremner has become one of the city’s most sought-after tenors. He performed several roles, including Manrico, in Windham Orchestra's Production of Il Trovatore.
Floor tickets are $60 each, available through the order form in the Marblehead Reporter, or online: click here for floor seats.
Balcony seats are $35 each, and are available in person at Arnould Gallery and Framery, 111 Washington Street; and Spirit of ’76 Bookstore, 107 Pleasant Street. They are also available online: click here for balcony seats.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit Marblehead charities, scholarships and philanthropic projects of the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor. (Report by Pam Peterson)

BOARD NOMINATIONS DEADLINE IS TOMORROW

From the RCOMH Board of Directors:
It's time for us to give thought to building our leadership team for the upcoming year. Currently, we have positions open for three officers:
- Vice President
- Vice President Elect
- Treasurer…
… and two Directors.
The election for these positions will take place on December 11, 2018 at the regularly scheduled Tuesday morning meeting.
If you haven't held a board position in our club we ask you to consider doing so. The board is a committed group of volunteers who want to support and influence the club initiatives, and value the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.
If you are interested in taking on such a role, or if you would like to nominate a fellow club member, please get in touch with Mike Cognata no later than tomorrow. You may click here to send him a message or speak with him at the Club meeting.
If you would like to read about the duties associated with each position please refer to the Club’s bylaws disseminated by John Williams in an November 3rd email message.
MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MOVED TO NOVEMBER 29TH

The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be postponed until Thursday, November 29th at 5:30 pm at the home of Lee Weed. The reason for the postponement is that Michael Cognata will be out of town this coming Thursday and next Thursday is, of course, Thanksgiving Day.
MOLLY AND SEYLA

We extend a warm welcome to Molly Williams and Seyla Nhean, who will be inducted as RCOMH members, tomorrow November 13th at our morning meeting. After saying “hello” to Molly and Seyla don’t forget to sign the “hello sheet”… unless you wish to volunteer a few bucks to help out with Lenny’s moonlighting as a fundraiser.
AN OLD FRIEND COMES BACK

Janet Nittmann

Our guest speaker this week is Janet Nittmann, CEO of Windrush Farm. Located in North Andover, Windrush Farm is a non-profit organization providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities and for children and adults with special needs, veterans, youth at risk, survivors of human trafficking and more. Janet has visited with our Club before and hers is always an interesting presentation.

  UNSUNG HEROES AWARDS DINNER

Club president Michael Cognata with honoree Janet Fitch Parker

The Unsung Heroes Awards Dinner was great. Mike Cognata reports that “there were over 275 people attending the awards evening at the Four Points Sheraton in Wakefield. As you know, our Unsung Hero nominated by our Club was Janet Fitch Parker.
This was a huge success with numbers significantly more than the District organizers expected. There were 24 clubs represented each with an Unsung Hero. After a wonderful dinner, the Unsung Heroes and their presidents where announced and brought up one by one.  They were each given a Paul Harris Fellow medallion, certificate and pin by District Governor Bob Wood and Foundation Chair Liz Cullen. In addition, there was a silent auction of baskets with local goodies supplied by each club (our Club’s donation yielded approximately $250) which yielded in total over $2700 for the Foundation. This amount is in addition to the $1,000 from each club received by the Foundation for the PHFs. All in all I would say an excellent night for the honorees, clubs, District, and the Foundation.
As I looked around the huge and packed room, I noticed that our RCoMH was perhaps the best represented of all with 12 people from our Club very cozy around one table. We can be exceptionally proud of the turn out and support from our Club at this event!
I would like to personally thank all of those who attended and all of those who contributed in anyway. Most especially, our gratitude to Mike Elkin for the very generous donation of his PHF points.” (Thank you Judy Black, for the photo)
STOP & SHOP TO DONATE ALL 120 ALUMINUM ROASTING PANS FOR THE MARBLEHEAD FOOD PANTRY!

From Jessica Barnett: Enormous thanks to Stop & Shop in Vinnin Square! Following up on the club’s pan procurement last year, when we approached the store's General Manager about arranging for this year’s purchase of 120 aluminum disposable roasting pans, we had barely said Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor…Marblehead Food Pantry…120 aluminum disposable roasting pans, when the General Manager said, “Oh sure! We’ll donate them all.” Wow!
Those pans will meet the Food Pantry’s clients’ holiday needs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. If all goes according to plan, the pans will be delivered to the Pantry’s food storage area in the lower level of The Masonic Building this Tuesday morning.
Plus, when the General Manager heard that the Marblehead Police Department collects leftover Halloween candy to send to the troops overseas, he said that as soon as Stop & Shop Corporate releases the candy to be donated, he will take whatever candy remains to our police department. It may be a few more weeks, but this is his intent.
So, if you venture into the Vinnin Square Stop & Shop this holiday season, please express the club’s great gratitude for their tremendous generosity and kindness. What a splendid way to start the holiday season!
Pam Peterson, Jessica Barnett, Michael Cognata, Kathleen Murphy, Judy Black, John Williams, and Beth Robinson contributed to this edition of Scuttlebutt. Thank you, very much.
