District Governor Bob Wood passed away Sunday afternoon, following a prolonged illness. We send his family our deepest condolences as we honor a great Rotarian and friend to many in our club, district and beyond. Bob, a lifelong action man at Rotary, is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan, his son Bradley, daughter-in-law Anita, and granddaughter Taylor Sara.
SALUTING THE NEW LEADERSHIP CLASS

One of the last things Bob Wood did for Rotary was to send best wishes for the newly elected leaders at last Thursday’s District Installation Dinner. Hundreds of family members and friends joined dozens of district officers and club presidents at the Danversport Yacht Club for ab evening of fellowship. In leading his last meeting as President, Michael Cognata thanked all who contribute to the club's initiatives and projects and all who helped make his presidency successful. As he rode into the sunset, Mike spoke about his challenges – waking up early – and accomplishments – mastering the art of staying awake. But after this light moment he also said we wished the club had helped its own just as it did so much to help the community. “Sometimes, some of our own members need help”, he said. We thank him for his leadership, for the rapprochement between the two Marblehead Clubs, and for being graciously fair to all.

PAUL HARRIS WINNERS

Pam Peterson (3rd left) receives the Paul Harris Award from Don Doliber, Club President Michael Cognata and incoming President Kathleen Murphy

We waited until Pam Peterson, returned to town to publicly acknowledge this year’s Paul Harris Foundation Awards recipients. At the Club Installation Dinner, Don Doliber made the announcement that Pam Peterson and Kang Yu were this year’s winners.

“The presentation of Paul Harris recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational program.
Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of The Rotary Foundation.
A contribution to the Rotary Foundation is an investment in the ideal of good will, peace and understanding. That is an ideal held high by Rotarians the world over, and one that the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor clearly shares. As Rotary works with such individuals of good will, we believe the ideal will become a reality.
The Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor has presented the 2019 Paul Harris Fellow to:
Kang Yu for his service to our Club and his positive attendance at every major event.  He has always been there to give positive advice and re-enforcement to our club presidents, and
Pam Peterson for her service quietly to help the club especially on publicity for the POPS. She has been there to co-chair events and provide silent leadership." Congratulations !!!

THE INCREDIBLE DR. AL

The incredibly youthful 93 y.o. psychologist Dr. Al Tartarunis paid us a visit last week to warn that “others are not driving you crazy. You are.” He offered uniquelty entertaining advice for life: “I may not be much, but I’m all I’ve got. If you don’t like who you are, tough sh*t. Like who you are. You’re all you’ve got”.  He thinks a good life needs references such as “patience, kindness, understanding and honesty. But do not forget to have fun.” I was so entertained I forgot to photograph him...

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS WANTED

The Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor is still seeking applicants who wish to pursue Second Chance Scholarships: trades and other non-college education or training to improve their skills and widen their employment opportunities. Deadline is mid-July. All the details and small print are here, in the link to the Marblehead Scholarship page.
BECAUSE WE CARE

Our Rotary Club is, indeed, a special family. And in that spirit, the club’s Care Committee welcomes opportunities to celebrate our members' special events, milestones and achievements. We send out birthday greetings and congratulatory cards on a regular basis. But also, as a family, we seek to be supportive when a member or a member’s family is going through challenges — perhaps an illness or the loss of a loved one. If you know about an event or experience that the Care Committee should be aware of, please do let us know. In cases of challenges, we will seek your guidance and will be respectful of wishes for confidentiality and privacy. You might even like to serve on this committee. We welcome your help in “caring” for our fellow members. In all cases, please contact Jessica Barnett at jdharbar@comcast.net

Thank you Don Doliber and John Williams for your contributions to Scuttlebutt.
