Scuttlebutt March 13, 2022
This week we are in for another treat.  Kris Hamel will be providing us with some of the historical and geopolitical underpinnings of what is happening in Ukraine.  Kris is currently in the UAE with his family so hopefully we will have as good a connection as we had with John Dunlop from Madagascar.  We are becoming quite an impressive international group.  Kris was an exchange student in Russia and speaks the language.  He has a master’s degree in International Relations.  He has worked with the World Bank and with the UN and with those organizations worked extensively in this region of the world.  Iva, Kris’s wife, is on assignment for the World Bank in the UAE.   Kris is also a nephew of mine.
I will send the zoom link on Monday.  Please share with whomever you think would enjoy this presentation.
We meet both in person, at the Masons, and on zoom Tuesday at 7:30.   Breakfast = $7:30.

UKRAINE:  Joan Arsenault has clarified that club or individual contributions to Rotary’s Disaster Relief Fund do count under the Annual Share for PH points.  Rotary and Shelter Box, that is setting up lodgings in Poland) continue to be two of the best donation routes to take to ensure the donations realize maximum value. Also, World Kitchen is providing food and meal relief.

At MHS there is a donation spot for goods that will be shipped to Ukraine March 15.  Donations that are requested are: wipes, diapers (all sizes), bandages, hand sanitizer (especially travel size), Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, gauze & tape (all sizes),  alcohol pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, feminine products, bars of soap, and shampoo (especially travel size).
The items can be dropped in the front office at Marblehead High School, 2 Pleasant Street. The items will be delivered to the nonprofit Sunflower of Peace, https://www.sunflowerofpeace.com/ and the Polish company Meest, will ship them to Ukraine and Poland.   https://www.wickedlocal.com/story/marblehead-reporter/2022/03/09/ukrainian-family-marblehead-high-school-team-up-to-help-war-victims/9439295002/

On Monday a photo of Chief King and representatives of both Marblehead Rotary clubs will be taken to appear in local news media.  The following text will accompany the photo.
Our police force exists to “Protect and Serve”...Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self.” In conjunction with Rotary District 7930, the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor and the Rotary Club of Marblehead have donated $6,000 to the Marblehead Police Donation Fund. The donation will be used toward the purchase of commercial quality gym equipment which will be placed in an area that is currently being created at the police station. The gym will encourage the good health and wellness of our police force, which must maintain top mental and physical standards to meet the demanding standards required of police, now and into the future. Our Yard Sale:  Please begin to set aside treasures that can be sold at our Marblehead Harbor Club yard sale May 14-15 at Jess’s home.  This is an chance for you all to do some spring cleaning and to share with others your gems.  On March 29th after our speaker, we will begin to sign up for committees to ensure that this event is as successful as possible and that we all have an opportunity to participate.  This should be a fun event and allow us to continue to provide our humanitarian and scholarship aid.
